Hyper
pigmentation is a disorder characterized by dark areas on the skin, and is
caused by the increased amount of melanin, the dark pigment of the skin.
Exposure to sunlight, pregnancy, certain diseases, age or trauma can lead to
disorders of melanin and create unsightly brown spots characteristic of this
benign disorder.
The exact causes
can be divided into two groups: external and internal.
External causes
can be those coming from the environment, such as exposure to the sun’s rays,
or to chemical compounds (betaxolol, minocycline, estrogen, progesterone, and
so on).
Internal
causes are related to heritage – people with darker skin are more prone to
developing this disorder.
Freckles, age
spots and sun spots are caused by harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun that
damage melanin and result in temporary or permanent discoloration. Often, these
stains can be observed on the face and hands; however, they can occur on any
part of the skin that has been exposed to the sun.
The scars from
trauma or surgery can also cause discoloration of the skin, and even if the
problem goes away, the dark spots remain.
Melasma is a
skin hyper
pigmentation that occurs during pregnancy, although sometimes it can also
affect men. It is usually talked about as the mask of pregnancy, because of the
brown spots covering the face – mainly nose and cheeks. This disorder usually
goes away by itself after pregnancy and does not cause major problems.
